EXHIBITION: Gwangju Design Biennale
Gwangju Design Biennale
Client Gwangju Design Biennale
Location Gwangju, Korea
When approached to showcase our work for the Gwangju Design Biennale, NAU decided not to simply show our work on a wall, but to embody the integration of digital design across the collaborative’s spectrum. As the convergence of software tools has blurred disciplines and computer-aided rapid prototyping given rise to new production techniques, NAU’s members have become engaged in architecture, exhibition design, film and video game design. The growing prevalence of this multi-disciplinary approach is demonstrated by our exhibition sculpture whose three media crystals cover our main areas of work: Cinematic Worlds, Built Worlds and Simulated Worlds.
The sculpture, first digitally modeled and then built from MDF with templates output for computer-driven milling, creates a compelling temporary architecture. Visitors engage with the sculpture, moving around the piece to view embedded flatscreen monitors—some placed at eye level for adults, others for children. A fourth crystal projects a mix of images from all worlds, summarizing our work for casual passersby.
